Griswald screencap Top Cat- The Movie

Griswald's portrayal in the 2011 movie

Griswald is a character who appears in two episodes, "The Missing Heir" and "Griswald". He was voiced by Don Messick. He returns in Top Cat: The Movie now voiced by Danny Trejo.

About Griswald[]

He spends most of his scenes antagonizing Top Cat and his gang; and makes another memorable appearance in Top Cat: the Movie. He was originally the accomplice in crime to Chutney the Butler, before discovering Chutney's plan on double-crossing him. Afterwards, he is briefly employed by the NYPD as a police dog and partnered up with Officer Dibble.

Description[]

A rather rectangular shaped bulldog, Griswald is thickly built with white fur and a small crescent-shaped tail. His muzzle is a dark shade of tan - almost brown - and his ears are completely black. His head comes up to a triangular tip, with a matching triangular nose, and a unibrow. He has a noticeable under-bite and wears a red collar.

In his second appearance in the series, Griswald takes on a much more oblong shape and he lacks his under-bite. He is more orange, with a lighter, peach-colored muzzle. His collar is now blue, rather than red. This version of Griswald stays on all fours for the majority of his screentime.

In the movie, his fur is turquoise and he wears a red collar. His cheekbones are more pronounced.

Personality[]

He is quite a vicious and dedicated dog, but also gullible and noticeably dim-witted. Griswald doesn't take kindly to others trying to pull the wool over his eyes - be it being lied to, tricked, or otherwise double-crossed. He is very literal-minded and will often dedicate himself to any goal he has at the moment with much gusto. He is, however, prone to slipping up and focusing on something else - such as when he was so bothered by Benny the Ball's piano playing that he derailed one of Chutney's plans just to correct Benny. In the film, he is convinced by Top Cat that he is, in fact, a cat, which Griswald believes due to his gullible nature. His speech pattern is usually minimal with occasional giggling,[1] but he is capable of speaking like a regular human.[2]

Trivia[]

  • Don Messick later recycled Griswald's giggling when he voiced the dog Muttley on Wacky Races.
  • Griswald has had the most design changes out of all the characters. However this can be interpreted as two separate dogs that happen to both be named 'Griswald.'
  • He could be attributed as the latest and most recent member of the Top Cat gang after the end of the 2011 movie.
